Coventry City Council: List of Committees



Appeals Committee
The City Council establishes Appeals Committees from time to time to hear cases, where there is a right of appeal, against decisions made by the City Council. These may include Human Resource appeals against dismissal and Social Services Home Care Charges appeals.
Appointment Panel
Appointment Panels are established as and when required.
Cabinet
Coventry Councillors operate a Cabinet system with ten councillors, each with a separate area of responsibility for council services.The cabinet meets every month while Cabinet Members hold individual meetings throughout the year, both are held in public.
Council
This is the only forum where all 54 Councillors meet together and have the opportunity for political debate on issues of importance to the City Council and make major decisions about Policies and Services. It provides a showcase for the City and the City Council for example, Coventry Citizen of the Month; debates on topical issues; and questions and can provide the opportunity for promoting the importance of democracy and accountability by being the setting for challenge of Leader and Cabinet Members; presenting of petitions etc. The meeting is Chaired by the Lord Mayor.
Licensing and Regulatory Committee
The Licensing and Regulatory Committee takes decisions on various licensing matters (e.g. alcohol, public entertainment, gambling, taxis and private hire) and on various public protection prosecutions brought by the City Council.
Planning Committee
Planning committee determines major and/or contentious planning applications, including those where in excess of five objections have been received. All other applications are determined by officers as delegated decisions.
Scrutiny Co-ordination Committee
The city council has established five Scrutiny Boards and an over-arching Scrutiny Co-ordination Committee. These are made up of Councillors from across the political parties who are not members of the Executive. Some of the Boards include co-opted members of the public. The roles of the Scrutiny Co-ordination Committee are to develop and manage Scrutiny in the Council, Co-ordinate and monitor the work of the five Scrutiny Boards, undertake cross-cutting reviews, consider 'call-ins' - where Councillors want to discuss in more detail decisions that have already been taken by the Cabinet/Cabinet Members. The Committee is also responsible for matters covered by the Cabinet Member (Policy, Leadership and Governance) Portfolio.
Standards Committee
The Standards Committee includes an independent Chair and independent members who recommend the code of conduct for councillors and monitor its implementation.
