Ken has been a councillor for the Earlsdon ward in Coventry since 1986, and Leader of the Conservative Group at the Council since 2003. From 2002 to 2003 he was also Lord Mayor of the city. During his time as Lord Mayor, he and his wife Mary, who was Lady Mayoress, became well-known to thousands of Coventry people as they visited many people, places and communities in the city they both live.

He has lived in Coventry since 1972, working for a number of multi-national companies such as Nestle and ICI in sales management positions. From 1990 until he became Leader of the Council, he was the Conservative party agent for Coventry's parliamentary constituencies.

Other positions Ken has held during his time in public service include being a member of the Local Government Improvement Board, a Director of Whitefriars Housing Association, a governor at two Coventry schools, chairing various council committees and a member of the West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority.

He is also on the board of Advantage West Midlands, the government's regional development agency responsible for the economic development of the West Midlands, with an annual budget of more than £300 million running around 2,500 projects across the region.

In May 2009 Ken was asked by Local Government minister John Healey to join a new taskforce, the Governance and Performance Transition Board, which has been established to help support improvements in Stoke-on-Trent City Council, rebuilding the public's confidence in Stoke's politics and safeguarding over £1 billion of its current and future Government investment. The group includes leading councillors and council officers from around the country.

Ken is an active member and previous chair of the Coventry Partnership, the city's local strategic partnership which brings together key representatives from the Council, police, health, voluntary and business who work to deliver improvements in the quality of life for every Coventry resident. During his time as a Leader of the council, the council became one of the fastest improving councils in the country, being awarded a four star rating by government watchdogs, the Audit Commission in the spring of 2009.

This doesn't leave much time for hobbies or relaxing, but when he can Ken enjoys motor racing and previously held a private flying licence. He also enjoys spending time with his family; Ken and Mary have four sons (Neil, Barry, Paul and David) and five grandchildren.
